*Wardrobe: Choosing a wardrobe for a family shoot can be stressful, exhausting, and time consuming…but here are a few tips that will make it easier for you! Start with what kind of ‘look’ you want to go for. If you’re wanting to create a more soft and elegant look, choose neutral colors like creams, soft pastels, slate blues, tans and grays! If you’re going for a fun spunky look, choose base colors that coordinate well with pops of color like bright red or yellow. It is also fun to add accessories like scarves and headbands! Try to stay away from being matchy-matchy. A great example of ‘matchy-matchy’ is everyone in jeans and a white shirt. Instead, try putting a child in a fun patterned dress or shirt and pull colors from that! And remember, before you go and buy all new outfits for the entire family, shop in your own closet for some basics!! You will be surprised at what you can put together with what you already own. Check out this beautiful family session for excellent wardrobe tips!

*Planning Ahead: Many times we find ourselves scrambling for last minute items or we find out that something doesn’t fit right! To avoid this, have your outfits set out ready to go a few days before your shoot date! Dress your child(ren) in their outfits days before to make sure everything is comfortable and fits well! If you want to have haircuts done, try setting an appointment the week before so it is more natural looking for photos! Simple planning ahead of time will prevent everyone from feeling stressed and will allow you and your family to have a great time!

*Scheduling: Make sure you book a day that is best for YOU! Give yourselves plenty of time to get ready, especially if you have young children. If you have a child that has a scheduled nap time, try booking your session for afterwards so you have a happy, well-rested little one! Another great tip for the whole family, is make sure that everyone is well-fed, especially if you have little ones!

*Talk to your kids: If you have children, talk to them beforehand about what will be going on! Kids love to know what is going on, it makes them feel grown up and like they are a part of something extra special (because they are!). Get them excited by showing them fun examples of photographs, or letting them pick out an aspect of their outfit! Meeting new people can make children nervous, try different ways to help them feel familiar with the photographer before hand. These kids had a blast; click here to check out this fun family shoot!

*Have Fun: This tip is very important!! We love to have fun with our families that we get to work with! Don’t be afraid to be silly and sweet with your loved ones! This will allow the photographer capture those true, beautiful moments that you have with your family on a day to day basis.

*Communication: Here at Fallbrook Photography we believe that excellent communication between photographer and client is most important! We want to know your ideas and what you like, as well as what you want to stay away from! When choosing a photographer, always go with someone that is flexible to work with you and your family during your session! We love to use productivity sites to interact with our clients. This helps communication flow on a constant basis, so everyone knows what is going on and what to expect.

We hope you enjoyed these tips and that they were helpful for planning your family session! If you would like to receive updates on tips and other fun newsletters from us at Fallbrook Photography simply put in your information below!
